BRETHREN CHURCH CELEBRATES 150TH ANNIVERSARY

Members of five Church of the Brethren congregations in Botetourt County have begun a celebration of the 150th anniversary of denominational ministry there. On each of the five Sundays in March, there is a 7 p.m. study session focusing on the history of one of the churches.

Gatherings will be at the Daleville, Cloverdale, Troutville and Blue Ridge churches. Children's activities will be provided.

The Rev. Kevin Daggett, co-pastor of the Daleville Church, said the history session series will be followed by an Easter sunrise service at Camp Bethel, the church's conference center, at 7 a.m. April 19.

On May 17, the Cloverdale church will be the site of a hymn-singing event at 7 p.m.

On June 28, the Daleville church will be host to a service of thanksgiving starting at 4 p.m. All events are open free to the public.

Daggett said the first Botetourt Brethren congregation, formed in 1842, was known as the Valley Church; its first meeting house was erected in 1851 on the site of what is now the Daleville church on U.S. 220.
