PARISH CELEBRATES BUILDING CENTENNIAL THROUGHOUT YEAR

Celebration of the centennial of the St. John's Episcopal Church congregation's use of its stone building at Elm Avenue and South Jefferson Street will continue through 1992.

The parish was organized in 1851 and has occupied other structures in Big Lick and early Roanoke.

On Wednesdays at 7 p.m. during Lent these clergymen formerly associated with the parish will speak following a service at 5:30 and dinner at 6:15: Wednesday, the Rev. Peter Fulghum of Smithburg, Md.; March 18, the Rev. E. Dudley Colhoun of Winston-Salem, N.C.; March 25, the Rev. Rob Goldsmith of Christiansburg; April 1, the Rev. George Holmes of Greensboro, N.C.; and April 8, the Rev. John Eberman of Baden, Md.

The newly renovated pipe organ will be rededicated at a recital Tuesday and, on May 12, a luncheon sponsored by the Episcopal Church Women will focus on active female members in each decade.

On May 24, retired Bishop William Marmion will officiate at a celebration of the consecration of the church building. That event took place May 26, 1903.

Further events include the use of the 1892 liturgy at a fall service, a needlepoint presentation, an early family recognition service and three guest speakers.

These will include the Rev. Dr. Clay Turner of Spartanburg, S.C., on Nov. 15; Bishop Frank Vest of Norfolk on Nov. 29; and Bishop A. Heath Light on Dec. 6. The service featuring Light, current bishop of the Diocese of Southwestern Virginia, will commemorate the centennial of the first service held in the downtown Roanoke building.

The Rev. Thomas O'Dell, formerly of the Louisville, Ky., area, has just assumed his duties as rector of the church.
