RETIRED POLICE OFFICER TO RUN FOR TOWN COUNCIL

Buford Barton, a retired police lieutenant, has become the fourth person to announce his intention to run for Vinton Town Council May 5.

Two incumbents, Robert Altice and Ray Sandifer, are seeking to regain their seats, but they are being challenged by Barton and Joseph Bush.

No candidate has announced to challenge Mayor Charles Hill, who also is up for re-election.

Barton, 50, retired from the Vinton Police Department in June.

Although he sees no big issues in the town now, "there are a lot of small things that need some attention," Bush said, citing rush-hour traffic congestion in the downtown area and on Walnut Avenue as an example.
