Sally Rhodes Ahner, whose parents, Alan and Frances Rhodes, live in Roanoke, will present a vocal recital Sunday at 4 p.m. at South Roanoke United Methodist Church.
Now an instructor in voice at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., Ahner is a graduate of Salem College and Eastman School of Music. During her undergraduate years, she directed music during the summers at South Roanoke and Raleigh Court United Methodist churches.
A native of Pearisburg, Ahner was reared in Staunton. In recent years she has presented programs in Nashville and Johnson City, Tenn., as well as in Texas and Arizona.
The recital is free. The church is at 2330 S. Jefferson St.
Cancer society plans benefit daffodil sale
The American Cancer Society is sponsoring Daffodil Week March 16-20.
Orders for the flowers are being taken through Friday; they will be delivered or may be picked up March 17 and 18. The minimum order is 12 bunches.
The prices are as follows: One box (500 flowers), $160; one-half box (250 flowers), $85; one-quarter box (125 flowers), $50; a single bunch (10 flowers), $5.
Arrangements may be made to deliver the flowers to hospitals, nursing homes or other locations. To order, call Anne Weaver at 344-8699.
Christ Episcopal plans Wednesday programs
A series of evening programs to strengthen spiritual growth during Lent will begin Wednesday at Christ Episcopal Church, 1101 Franklin Road S.W.
They will begin with the service of evening prayer at 6 p.m. followed by a meal at 6:15. For reservations and child care, call 343-0159.
The classes will be in session from 7 to 8:30 and will include "The Story of Your Life: Writing Your Spiritual Autobiography," led by the Rev. Deborah H. Hunley, rector; "Life's Transitions: The Separations and Changes We Face," led by the Rev. Dr. James Henry, priest associate; and "Questions of Faith," a video-based discussion group.
4-H Club Talent Show winners announced
Six students from a field of 27 were winners in dance, vocal and instrumental competition recently at the annual 4-H Talent Show held at Hollins College.
Niki Newman of Cave Spring High School took top honors in the senior category for singing The Judds' song, "Give a Little Love." Second place went to William Fleming's Matt Horwatt for his playing of Scott Joplin's "Maple Leaf Rag." Kristel Michelle Jenkins of William Byrd High School was the winner in the dance category.
In the junior category, Burlington Elementary's Amanda Clyburn won by dancing to "Rocky Top." Hidden Valley Junior High's Suzanne Squires' piano rendition of "The Firefly" gave her runner-up honors. Erin Ayers of Mason's Cove Elementary was the winner in the vocal category.
The six will have the chance to compete for state titles at Virginia Tech in June.
Noah's Landing school accepting registration
Registration for the 1992-93 session of Noah's Landing Preschool at Christ Lutheran Church is in progress.
Classes run from September through May, meeting 9 a.m.-noon on weekdays. They are open for toddlers through pre-kindergarten 5-year-olds.
