INDEPENDENCE - Lieutenant Colonel, Retired, Walter D. Hampton, Jr., age 73, died Wednesday, March 4, 1992, at his residence, Rt. 1, Independence, Va. He was born October 16, 1918 at Independence, Va., to Walter D. Hampton, Sr., and Faye Johnson Hampton. He served twenty years in the U. S. Army, World War II and was manager for twenty years with the Virginia State Employment Commission, Galax, Va. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Independence, Va. and a member of Grayson County V.F.W. Post #7726. Surviving are a daughter, Mary Michele (Mickey) Hampton Todd, Route 3, Independence, Va.; son, Walter D. Hampton, III, Gloucester Point, Va.; four grandsons, Jason Hampton Todd, Jonathan Kirk Todd, both of Independence, Va.; Wade Grayson Hampton, Jesse Clay Hampton, both of Gloucester Point, Va.; three sisters, Wanda H. Graves, Orange City, Fla.; Annie H. Ramsey, Staunton, Va.; Sara H. Fox, Roanoke, Va.; brother, Edward S. Hampton, Hillsville, Va.; sister-in-law, June P. McKinnon, Sugarland, Texas; several nieces and nephews also survive. A graveside service will be conducted Sunday, March 8, 1992, at 2:00 p.m. at Independence Cemetery. The Rev. Hal Eaton will officiate. The body will remain at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, there will be no visitation at the funeral home. The family will receive friends Saturday evening at the residence from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The family sincerely requests no flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Independence Rescue Squad, or Independence Volunteer Fire Department. Military rites will be conducted by Grayson County V.F.W. Post #7726. Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
