JEFFERSON FOREST SETS MEETINGS ON POWER LINE

The Jefferson National Forest will hold town meetings in Salem, New Castle and three West Virginia locations in April to gather information for an environmental-impact statement on a proposed high-voltage power line.

An agency spokesman said a contract soon will be awarded for the statement, which will study the environmental effects of the line Appalachian Power Co. plans to build from Oceana, W.Va., to Cloverdale, near Roanoke.

Joy Berg, forest supervisor, said the deadline for written comment on the line has been extended from March 31 to May 22 to give people a chance to learn more about the study.

Comments may be submitted at the town meetings or mailed to Berg at the forest, Power Line Project, 210 Franklin Rd., S.W., Caller Service 2900, Roanoke 24001.

Forest representatives will be at the meetings from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Salem Civic Center, Parlor A, on April 21; New Castle Senior Citizen Center on April 16; Union, W.Va. fire hall on April 13; Room 105, Fine Arts Building, Concord College, Athens, W.Va., April 14; and Lindside, W.Va., Senior Citizen Center on April 20.
