JOBLESS CLAIMS FALL IN HOLIDAY WEEK

The number of Americans filing first-time claims for unemployment benefits fell to 437,000 in the week ending Feb. 22, the first decline in three weeks, the government said Thursday.

The Labor Department said new claims for jobless benefits fell by 21,000 from 458,000 in the previous week, putting them at their lowest level since late January.

Analysts cautioned against reading too much into the decline, which occurred during a week that included the Presidents' Day holiday, leaving jobless workers one less day than usual to file claims. - Associated Press
