TURNER ACADEMIC HONOREE

Senior center Russell Turner of Hampden-Sydney has been honored as a first-team College Division GTE Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America. He is the first Hampden-Sydney basketball player to receive the honor.

A double major in English and economics, Turner has a 3.561 grade-point average. He spent six weeks last summer studying at Oxford University in England and recently has been selected a Phi Beta Kappa.

Turner, from Roanoke, averages 22.3 points and 10 rebounds a game for the 16th-ranked Tigers, who enter the NCAA Tournament with a 23-5 record. He is the leading scorer in Hampden-Sydney history and was voted the Old Dominion Athletic Conference player of the year this season.

Daryle Dooms of Lynchburg College made the second team. Dooms carries a 3.3 GPA as a business major. He averaged 17.8 points and nine rebounds per game for his career. - Staff report
