HOKIES TAKE A PAIR IN COLLEGE BASEBALL

Virginia Tech rallied in both games to sweep a college baseball doubleheader from Howard University, 3-2 and 8-2.

The Hokies (7-0-1) overcame a 2-0 deficit in the first game and scored the winning run in the fifth inning on a wild pitch. Sophomore right-hander Rob Gibson of Salem went the distance for Tech, allowing two third-inning triples. He struck out eight in earning his first win of the season.

Howard (1-9) scored twice in the first inning of the second game before Tech freshman Ron Preston shut them down the rest of the way.

The Hokies put away the game with seven runs in the fifth inning. Fred Hatfield doubled twice in the inning and Les Jennett drove in two runs with a double.

Hatfield had five hits for the Hokies in the two games. - Staff report
