SUSPENDED TERM GIVEN IN CEMETERY VANDALISM

A 19-year-old Wytheville man convicted of involvement in damaging 18 gravestones in East End Cemetery last July 22 has received a suspended sentence and been ordered to pay for some of the damage.

Christopher Lee Aker and three juveniles, ages 15-17, were arrested in September and accused of causing thousands of dollars worth of damage in the cemetery. The juveniles have also been convicted and ordered to make restitution of $700 each.

Aker was tried Tuesday. Circuit Judge Willis Woods imposed a 12-month suspended jail term and ordered him to pay $2,900 to the town of Wytheville. Aker must also do some community service work. - Southwest bureau
