VIRGINIA MAN KILLED IN MINING ACCIDENT

A Virginia man was killed Thursday when he was pinned between a machine and the roof of a coal mine, an official said.

James W. Thomas, 39, of Pocahontas, Va., was dead on arrival at Welch Emergency Hospital after the 11 a.m. accident at Algoma No. 14 mine, said mine Superintendent Ronnie Bailey.

The mine, which is owned by Deep Star Mining Inc., employs about 10 people. State and federal officials are investigating, Bailey said. - Associated Press
