MAMS, CARL F.

Carl Francis Mams, Sr., age 71, of 355 West North Street, Wytheville, Va., died Thursday, March 5, 1992, in the Bluefield Regional Medical Center. Funeral Mass will be held Monday, March 9, 1992, at 10:00 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with Father James Grealish officiating. Entombment will be in the Sunset Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Rural Retreat. He was born in Adolph, W.Va., the son of the late Frank and Mary Verderber Mams. He was educated at Saint Brennan's Catholic Grade School, Elkins High School and received his B. S. Degree in Education from the Davis and Elkins College. He served in the U. S. Marine Corp during World War II. He was a teacher and coach at Big Creek High School from 1941-1964 and George Wythe High School from 1964-1983. He retired in 1983 after thirty-seven years service. He was a past president of the Wytheville Lions Club; a member of the American Legion Post #9; past president of the Holy Name Society; Christ the King Catholic Church, War, W.Va.; and a member of the W.C.E.A.; the V.E.A. and the N.E.A. Honors include 1st Team, All State Football, W.Va., 1937-38; 2nd Team, All State Basketball Captain, W.Va., 1939; Big Creek Memoirs Yearbook dedicated 1963; George Wythe Echo Yearbook dedicated, 1966; Centennial Sports Great, W.Va., 1963; W.Va. Coaches Association Award, 1983; New River District Coach of the Year, 1965; Personalities of the South, 1972; and World Personalities, 1972. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Wytheville, Va. He is survived by his wife, Geneva Myer Mams; one daughter, Tamera Annette Mams of Boulder, Colorado; one son and daughter-in-law, Carl, Jr. and Linda Mams of Lexington, Ky.; two sisters, Evelyn Mams Kilduff of Elkins, W.Va.; Virginia Mams of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one brother, Joe Mams of Elkins, W.Va.; one granddaughter, Ashley Nichole Mams of Lexington, Ky.; several nieces and nephews also survive. The family will receive friends at the Barnett Funeral Home from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Sunday with a Prayer Service to be held at 8:30 p.m. The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the American Cancer Society or to the Carl F. Mams, Sr. Scholarship Fund at George Wythe High School. Barnett Funeral Home, Wytheville, is in charge of the arrangements.
