FORMER MANAGER OF METS BUYS PENINSULA PILOTS

Bud Harrelson, fired as manager of the New York Mets last September, reached an agreement Thursday to purchase the Seattle Mariners' Class A affiliate here at the end of the 1992 season.

Neither Harrelson nor Jay Acton, owner of the Peninsula Pilots, would disclose financial terms.

The arrangement was announced six days after Acton's bid to sell the Carolina League baseball team to a pair of Hampton-area developers collapsed.

Harrelson, who lives on New York's Long Island, said he has not considered whether he will relocate the team or attempt to build a new stadium. The Pilots now play in War Memorial Stadium, an aging facility that is badly in need of major renovations.
