WHAT MANAGER HAD OFFICE REDECORATED?

DURING AN interview (news story, Feb. 18) in which candidates for mayor were discussing trimming the fat in city government, David "Bowers - without naming names - said one top manager spent thousands of dollars to redecorate his office last year at the same time the administration could not find the money to implement all-day kindergarten . . . "

Maybe the interview was not the appropriate place for name-dropping, but this manager should be identified. The taxpayers of Roanoke city paid for the redecorating, they pay his salary, and they have a right to know what they are getting for their money.

I suggest that one of your enterprising reporters do an expose complete with color photos of the newly decorated office and the (hopefully) embarrassed manager. Humiliation before the public would, in my opinion, be a small price to pay for behavior that is at worst stupid, and at best incredibly insensitive. RONALD K. CALLAHAN ROANOKE

Editor's note: When asked by a reporter, Bowers refused to name the manager.
