RADFORD PRESENTS NEW MUSIC CONCERT

Synthesist-composer Gilbert Trythall and members of the Radford University music faculty will present a festival of new music March 18 and 19 in the school's Preston Hall.

In a free lecture-recital starting at 8 p.m. on March 18, Trythall will examine the effects of technology on the arts. He will be joined by soprano Janis Peri in a performance of his own synthesizer compositions.

One of them, "Hard Start Variations," draws its text from President Bush's speech justifying the military liberation of Kuwait.

On March 19 at 8 p.m., the Radford Singers and members of the university music faculty will present a concert of music by 20th century composers George Crumb, Ned Rorem, Charles Ives, Irving Fine and David Diamond.

Also on the program is "Flautus Aeterna," a work by Bruce P. Mahin of the Radford faculty.

Performing faculty members will be Kathryn Obenshain, Caryl Conger and Betty Turner. Joining them will be flutist David Jacobsen and cellist Patrick Simpson of Virginia Tech.

There will be an admission charge of $3 for the general public and $1 for children. Admission will be free to those with valid Radford and Virginia Tech identification.
