GREEN WAVE WRAPS UP METRO CROWN

Kim Lewis scored 25 points as No. 21-ranked Tulane held off Southern Mississippi 80-70 Saturday to end a five-game losing streak and claim the Metro Conference regular-season men's basketball title.

Tulane (20-7 overall, 8-4 Metro) again got a big afternoon from its bench, known as "The Posse." The reserves contributed 21 points, including 14 from Carlin Hartman.

After the first 15 minutes saw several lead changes, Tulane used a 13-5 run to build a 35-29 halftime lead. Hartman had six of his 14 first-half points in the run.

Bernard Haslett and Ron Rembert hit 3-pointers as Southern Miss (12-15, 5-7) closed to 42-38 with 17:15 to play. Then the Golden Eagles' Clarence Weatherspoon was assessed a technical foul, and Southern Miss went cold, letting Tulane increase the lead to 59-42 on Anthony Reed's jumper with 10:33 remaining.

Southern Miss made one last run, closing to 72-63 on Dallas Dale's 3-pointer with 2:34 to play, but the Green Wave then hit eight of 10 free throws to clinch the victory.
