CULTURAL LAUREATES RECEIVE WILDER'S PRAISE

Gov. Douglas Wilder welcomed 30 new members Saturday to the Virginia Cultural Laureate Society, a group of Virginians honored for their contributions to American progress.

"To be a Virginia Cultural Laureate is not just to excel in a particular field, but to fortify the whole of our commonwealth," Wilder said at a Capitol ceremony.

Among the new society members are Virginia Chief Justice Harry Carrico, business owners and art patrons Sidney and Frances Lewis of Richmond, Hampton University President William Harvey and author and educator Nancy Larrick of Winchester. - Associated Press
