RESIGNATION COULD SLOW FUEL CLEANUP

The resignation of the federal official overseeing cleanup of a massive underground fuel spill may push the effort even further behind schedule.

At least 100,000 gallons has seeped from a tank farm owned by Texaco affiliate Star Enterprises into a residential area. The fuel has tainted underground water. Robert Caron, the Environmental Protection Agency's top official on the scene, resigned his $60,000-a-year job late last month.

The cleanup is already several months behind schedule. - Associated Press
