The Green Wave's 80-70 victory made it 8-4 in the league and also determined Virginia Tech's first-round opponent. UNC Charlotte (7-5) won a three-way tie-breaker for the No. 2 seed, meaning the Hokies (3-9) and 49ers will meet in the first round at noon Friday. The teams split their two games this year.
The Hokies finished alone in last place for the first time in their 14 years in the league. In 1988-89, Tech and Southern Miss were tied for last with 2-10 conference records.
Because no tie-breakers could separate Louisville (7-5) and South Florida (7-5), a coin toss was held to determine the third- and fourth-place seeds.
South Florida won the coin toss to finish third and will play sixth-seeded Southern Mississippi at 2:30 p.m. Friday.
Fourth-seeded Louisville will play fifth-seeded Virginia Commonwealth at 7 p.m. Friday.
VCU and Southern Miss ended the season tied for fifth place with 5-7 conference records. The Rams won the tie-breaker because they split with UNC Charlotte, while the 49ers swept the Golden Eagles.
Tulane, in its third year of basketball after a self-imposed, four-year suspension of the program, won its first Metro regular-season title.
