TIGERS BOUNCE CENTRE 88-83 IN DIVISION III

Michael Wilson scored only five points Saturday night, but three were in the final 31 seconds of the second overtime as Hampden-Sydney beat Centre 88-83 in the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament.

Hampden-Sydney (24-5) had an 85-80 lead with 31 seconds left when Wilson went to the free-throw line to shoot a one-and-one. He hit the first and missed the second. Andy Cook made a 3-pointer for Centre with 20 seconds left before Wilson was fouled with eight seconds remaining.

Wilson made both free throws for the final margin.

Centre (19-8) scored the first five points in the first overtime for a 76-71 lead. But the Colonels did not get another point until Cook got free underneath to tie the score at 78 to force the second overtime.

Bat Barber led the Tigers with 28 points, and Russell Turner had 22.

Mark Holbrook had 20 for Centre. Cook added 17, Greg Mason 14 and David Demarcus 12.

Hampden-Sydney plays the winner of the Wisconsin-Whitewater/Wisconsin -Platteville game Friday or Saturday.
