REBELS CONTINUE LOSING WAYS

The Greensboro Monarchs, playing with the throttle wide open, accelerated past Roanoke Valley 7-1 Saturday night, moving a step closer to clinching the East Division title in the East Coast Hockey League.

The Rebels, fighting to stay alive in the playoffs, managed only 17 shots on the way to their fourth straight loss and ninth in 11 games.

Greensboro has won seven in a row and 10 of 11.

Greensboro took 91 shots in the two-game series against Roanoke Valley.

The Monarchs, who scored three times in the final period to beat the Rebels on Friday night, scored three in the first period Saturday night to subdue Roanoke early.

Phil Berger slapped a short shot past Rebels goalie Mike James at 16:21 of the period, breaking a scoreless duel. Two minutes later, John Devereaux stopped a Roanoke clearing pass inside the blue line, skated wide of James and flipped one to the far post for a 2-0 lead.

At 19:17, with James becoming rattled by the sudden surge of Greensboro offense, Eric Dubois rattled the pipes with a blast from the right circle for a 3-0 lead.

The Rebels, who took only six shots in the first period, did not recover. James was pulled 7:17 into the second after Roger Larche and Berger scored goals less than a minute apart to put Greensboro up 5-0.

Peter Sentner added a goal at the end of the second period for the Monarchs, and Larche scored short-handed 2:29 into the third for his second goal of the game and his seventh since joining the team six games ago.
