REPORTED EARNINGS

Hechinger Co., a Landover, Md.-hardware chain with a store in Roanoke, reported Monday that net earnings for the year ended Feb. 1 were $26.1 million, or 66 cents per share, up 12 percent compared to $23.3 million, or 65 cents per share, a year earlier. Sales for the year increased 15 percent to $1.6 billion from $1.4 billion last year. Comparable stores sales were up 2 percent for the year.

For the fourth quarter, the company reported a net loss of $1.5 million, or 4 cents per share, compared to a net loss of $800,000, or two cents per share, a year earlier. Sales for the fourth quarter were $357.7 million, up 16 percent compared to $308.9 million a year earlier.
