Steven Middleton, president of the county council of PTAs, asked the board for more information on the $390,000 in Virginia Public School Authority bonds the school system is seeking. In particular, he wanted to know if the $240,000 earmarked for an auxiliary gym at Floyd County High School was enough to finance the project.
"We don't want to support something that would hurt our credibility with the supervisors when we really need money," he said. But no one could answer his question.
School Board Chairman Bill Munzing said he did not know if the bond money would be used to build the proposed gym or to pay the $250,000 cost of planning major renovations to the county's old school buildings. So the PTA council at its board meeting later in the day tabled its resolution of support until its March 23 meeting.
The Board of Supervisors had approved the loan application 3-2 last month. But it may take up the matter again March 16.
So the School Board told Superintendent Omar Ross to revise the bond application to indicate that $240,000 would be used for an auxiliary building or to plan for major renovations to the electrical, plumbing and mechanical systems of existing school buildings, and the remaining $150,000 would go for site improvements at the schools.
The School Board scheduled a public hearing on its 1992-93 budget for March 23 at 7 p.m. in the administration building and a budget work session March 17 at 5:30 p.m.
