WHO, WHEN & WHERE

Schubert Mass at Greene Memorial

Franz Schubert's Mass No. 6 in E flat major will be presented Sunday as the concluding program in the 1991-92 fine arts series of Greene Memorial United Methodist Church.

Conducted by Richard Cummins, the concert is set for 4 p.m. in the church at Second Street and Church Avenue in downtown Roanoke. It will feature a 25-piece orchestra and a chorus of 35 including seven soloists.

The mass was completed in August 1828, just two months before Schubert's death in Vienna at the age of 31. It was part of a surge of music, including a symphony, three piano sonatas, a string quartet and more than a dozen other pieces, that was written during the composer's final year.

The mass was first performed in Vienna about a year after Schubert's death.

Soloists for Sunday's performance will be Joe Gaskey and Mark Frye, tenors; Gerry LoMascolo and Rita Cummins, sopranos; Jean Rakes and Charlene Landes, altos; and Robert Snead, bass.

There will be no charge for admission to the concert, though an offering will be collected to help defray expenses of the fine-arts series.
