Beamer said Foussekis told him Tuesday that he tentatively had decided to enter private business rather than join Tech's staff. However, Foussekis left the door open for a change of heart and Beamer said he expects a final decision today, five days before the start of spring practice.
Foussekis was en route to his native Charlottesville and could not be reached for comment. He apparently had told his family that if he was left without a job in coaching - as he was when Maryland coach Joe Krivak and his staff were fired - he would join relatives in a business venture.
Then came the offer to coach defensive tackles at Tech. Foussekis said Monday it is a difficult choice.
"He just [is having] a hard time making a decision whether to do this or go into something with his family," said Beamer, a teammate of Foussekis' in the late 1960s. "His loyalty to his family is one of the things I find very attractive about George.
"We [have] let it go on because George is a very close friend, and he was very sincere in his thoughts."
Foussekis was a Tech assistant from 1969-71 and is a member of the Tech Sports Hall of Fame. He was a Maryland assistant from 1972 through last season.
