BASSETT LIKELY TO BE LOOKING FOR BASKETBALL COACH

It appears Bassett High School will be looking for a new boys' basketball coach.

The Roanoke Times & World-News has learned that Tony Weeks, who has been Bassett's head basketball coach for eight years and has served in the Henry County school system for 15 years, plans to resign his coaching position.

"I haven't formally resigned, so I can't comment on it," Weeks said. It is known that Weeks is pursuing a master's degree and he seems willing to try being out of coaching for a while.

In eight years at Bassett, Weeks' only losing season was his first. Since then, the Bengals usually have been a contender in the tough Piedmont District, although they never have been able to muster the record of perennial power Martinsville or Laurel Park in recent years.

The Bengals went 12-10 this year, and Weeks' overall record is 98-66.

If Weeks turns in his resignation, one name that might surface as a successor is former G.W. Carver coach Stan Clark, who worked with the junior varsity and was an assistant for the girls' program that made the Region III tournament. Clark's Carver teams won a pair of Group A titles in 1986 and 1988 before that school was consolidated with Drewry Mason to form Magna Vista.

A new name, Horace Green, has emerged in the search for a football coach at Franklin County. Green has been to Franklin County twice to talk about the position.

"They said they'd get back to me," said Green, who last talked to school officials in February.

He was head coach four years at King George, a Group A school in Central Virginia, then moved with Richard Serbay to James Monroe. Serbay, with Green as an assistant, has made James Monroe a perennial Group A power.

Green played at Ferrum College and Western Carolina. He also has put in applications at Amherst County and Stafford, his alma mater.

Franklin County athletic director Jerry Little said his school still doesn't have a leading candidate for the job and that several people have been called back for second interviews.

Franklin County will hold a meeting tonight at 7 at the high school to discuss athletics. It is open to the public.

"Hopefully, this is the first step in trying to tear down the barriers between the public and high school, mend a few fences and answer some questions about rumors," Little said.

"As for the football coach, I can't give them an answer because I don't have one."

On Thursday, the Bedford County school board is expected to approve Mike Scharnus (Liberty) and John Caltagirone (Staunton River) as new football coaches.

Patrick Henry's boys' basketball team has returned to the USA Today rankings as the 23rd-ranked team. It is Patrick Henry's first appearance in the poll since the 1988 state championship team was ranked in the top 10.

PH is one position behind Akron (Ohio) Firestone, which has Troy and Monte Anderson. The Andersons played at Patrick Henry last year but were not eligible to play for the Patriots this year because they were too old. They were eligible to play in Ohio.
