NORTHUP QUITS APCO; POWER LINE CITED

Appalachian Power Co.'s vice president for its West Virginia operations, Richard E. Northup, resigned effective Sunday, saying he has become senior vice president of Charles Ryan Associates, a Charleston public relations and advertising firm.

Bob Zacher, a West Virginia opponent of Apco's proposed high-voltage power line, on Tuesday said Northup's move appeared to be a result of the West Virginia legislature's passage Saturday of a resolution criticizing the line.

In Roanoke, Don Johnson, an Apco spokesman, said the resolution had nothing to do with Northup's move.

Northup worked in governmental relations for Apco. He lived in Roanoke when he was Apco's environmental director from 1975 to 1983. - Staff report
