MATH, SCIENCE CAREERS TOPIC OF CONFERENCE

A conference for more than 600 girls on careers in mathematics and science will be offered Tuesday by the Norton branch of the American Association of University Women.

It will be held at Clinch Valley College from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The pupils in grades 5-7 will come from J.J. Kelly High School and L.F. Addington Middle School.

Participants will include Patricia Amateis, assistant chemistry professor at Virginia Tech, who will present a chemical "magic show," and Diane Nelson, professor of biology at East Tennessee State University, who will show a video on dangerous marine animals.

The program will provide information about careers of women who either are Southwest Virginia natives or work in the region. Women participating in panels work in such fields as engineering, radiology, pharmacy, veterinary science, certified public accounting, banking and dentistry.

The idea of the program is to create an interest among girls in studying math and science.
