CEMENT PLANT UNION SETS CONTRACT VOTE

The negotiating committee for 158 union employees at Roanoke Cement Co. in Botetourt County tentatively agreed Tuesday to a company contract offer that includes a pay raise of $2 an hour over 18 months, followed by a wage reopener.

Local D-314, International Association of Boilermakers, will vote on the offer Friday from noon to 6 p.m.

Ed Pittman, company vice president, said Roanoke Cement made slight changes in its provisions for subcontracting work and for medical insurance, but the economic package was unchanged. Jeff Stump, union president, said the committee unanimously agreed to the terms of the 37-month contract and will recommend that the offer be approved by the membership.

Tuesday's talks were the first in a month. The old contract expired in January. Union employees rejected company offers in two earlier votes and agreed to work without a contract. - Staff report
