HOKIES LOSE 1ST GAME OF SEASON

David Skown hurled a two-hit shutout over five innings as the University of Detroit Mercy handed Virginia Tech its first college baseball loss of the season, 7-0, in a rain-shortened game Tuesday.

Detroit Mercy (2-1) scored four runs on five hits in the top of the third inning off sophomore left-hander Rob Gibson, who lasted 2 innings. Mercy scored three more runs in the fourth off freshman Ron Preston, two on a home run by Todd Bruce.

Tech (10-1-1) is scheduled to play Detroit Mercy again today at 7 p.m. as part of the Hall of Fame Tournament on the Georgia Southern campus.
