COLLEGIATE SQUARE PROPOSED FOR DOWNTOWN BLACKSBURG

The proposed Collegiate Square shopping center next to Virginia Tech and downtown would include a variety of services and businesses - including a travel agency, flower shop and bookstore - the developer says.

Ray Chisholm has applied to have the town rezone 3.7 acres along Prices Fork Road and Turner Street for the $8 million project.

The town is holding a neighborhood meeting on the proposal Thursday at 4 p.m. in the Blacksburg Police Station training room. The public is invited.

The Environmental Quality and Land Use committees will discuss the rezoning request Monday at 4 p.m. That meeting will be in the first-floor conference room of the town hall and also is public. Committee members will tour the property before the meeting.

Planning Director William West said that after a preliminary review, the proposal does not appear to present any major problems. "It's an area that's been waiting" for some kind of development, he said.

Currently, there are vacant lots and a few older houses on the triangle- shaped property in the heart of Blacksburg.

Because of incorrect information provided to the newspaper, a site plan of the proposed Collegiate Square retail complex in downtown Blacksburg should not have designated a building at Gilbert and Turner streets as J&S Cafeteria.

The cafeteria will be built across Gilbert Street as a separate project, developer Ray Chisholm said. He does not have a confirmed tenant for the proposed building at Gilbert and Turner streets.
