FORESTS ARE WELL-MANAGED

THANK YOU very much for printing Robert M. Shaffer's letter Feb. 18 ("Timber harvest affects tiny area of forest").

If more people stopped and asked a few simple questions about our nation's forests, they might feel more comfortable that our forests are well-managed and are not about to disappear.

Maybe the fact that the forest-products industry and government agencies planted 6 million trees a day in 1988 will give more comfort to the uninformed. ROBERT E. GARST GERMANTOWN, TN
