Our principal, Phil Douglas, decided every girl at AHS was special, and he and his two assistant principals, Gary Moore and Tom Bierne, presented each girl with a long-stemmed red carnation in celebration of Valentine's Day. The boys were not left out; they were given heart cakes at lunch.
Mr. Douglas and his assistant principals paid for these gifts themselves and provided a lesson to all of us: that he cares about his students and believes that the school does have a role in the "Love connection" in showing that every student is special and deserves recognition.

Published correction ran on March 12, 1992.
Valentine's Day gifts to students at Alleghany High School in Covington were financed by profits on sales from soft-drink vending machines at the school. The gifts were not paid for by the principal and his assistants as stated in a letter on this page March 11.
