BANK PROFITS UP, BUT NOT EVERYWHERE

Commercial banks logged profits of $3.7 billion last year, four times the $907 million for the same period in 1990, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. reported Wednesday.

But the nearly 500 banks in California lost $379 million, compared with $447 million in profits in the last three months of 1990. And savings banks, which are concentrated in the Northeast, lost $423 million in the fourth quarter.

Virginia banks, the FDIC said, lost $70 million in last year's fourth quarter, compared with a $34 million loss in the final three months of 1990.
