BURROUGH GIVES UVA A SCARE

Virginia freshman basketball player Cory Alexander was taken aback Monday night when he entered his room and saw roommate Junior Burrough lying on the floor in obvious pain.

"I was the one who had to drive him to the hospital, but first I had to pick him up," said Alexander, who is considerably smaller than Burrough, listed at 6 feet 8 and 239 pounds. "I was pretty scared."

Burrough, who had practiced and lifted weights earlier in the day, complained of chest pains when he was admitted to the emergency room at University Hospital. He was diagnosed as having "community-acquired pneumonia."

Burrough was treated and released, and it appears likely he will be available Friday, when the Cavaliers meet Georgia Tech at noon in the ACC Tournament at Charlotte (N.C.) Coliseum.

"With the symptoms he was showing, it looks promising for him to play," trainer Ethan Saliba said.

Teammate Anthony Oliver said Burrough watched practice Tuesday until it was time for the team to attend a social.

"Then, all he did was eat," Oliver said.

\ Former UVa guard John Crotty was the only unanimous selection on the all-star team picked by the coaches in the Global Basketball Association. Crotty, who plays for the Greenville, S.C., franchise, is averaging more than 20 points and ranks in the league's top five in assists and 3-point percentage.

Another former Cavalier, Marc Iavaroni, played five games for Sioux Falls in the Continental Basketball Association as a favor to coach Kevin McKenna. Iavaroni, who played for several teams in the NBA, is doing television work in the Charlottesville area.

\ Although Duke has made the Final Four in each of the past three seasons and won the NCAA Championship last year, two-time ACC player of the year Christian Laettner and fellow senior Brian Davis have not won an ACC championship, twice losing in the final.

"I think Duke's going to come in possessed," Clemson coach Cliff Ellis said. "Duke has always been focused on the NCAA Tournament; this wasn't the big cup. They've been criticized - unjustly, I might add - for not winning it all. Now they have."

Clemson will get an opportunity to play Duke if the Tigers get past Maryland tonight in the first meeting of Nos. 8 and 9 seeds. There will be little time for celebration, however, because the 8-9 winner must play the next afternoon at 2:30.

\ Marty Fletcher, in his sixth season at Southwestern Louisiana after five seasons at VMI, will be making his first trip to the NCAA Tournament as a head coach by virtue of the Ragin' Cajuns' victory over Southwestern Louisiana in the Sun Belt Conference championship game.

On the morning the tournament started, Fletcher learned USL had been declared regular-season co-champion with Louisiana Tech, even though Louisiana Tech had picked up an extra victory by forfeit that gave it a one-game lead. The conference decided not to penalize USL for another team's mistake. Fletcher, who was Sun Belt Coach of the Year, is in the final year of his contract.

"I guess it runs out in June," said Fletcher, who has three consecutive 20-victory seasons. "I got a call from a reporter who said they were putting something together, but nobody has said anything to me."

\ Fletcher Arritt, coach at Fork Union Military Academy, says Virginia Tech is in good shape with 6-foot-3 point guard Shawn Good, originally from Columbus, Ind., and 6-4 shooting guard Jim Jackson of Janesville, Wis. The Hokies already have a commitment from 6-6 Shawn Smith of Fork Union, which finished 28-2.

\ One-time Ferrum College athletic director Tom Hickman is head of the search committee to find a successor for Steve Vacendak as head basketball coach at Winthrop College. There reportedly are 130 applicants to replace Vacendak, who will remain as athletic director. Hickman is assistant AD.

\ Bernard Johnson, a senior from Martinsville, was the leading scorer for Mary Washington (9-13) with a 14.5 average. Johnson, who played at Carver High in Fieldale and began his college career at Emory & Henry, also led the team in steals and was second in rebounds and assists.

\ Jamie Lee, a sophomore for NCAA Tournament-bound Campbell University, was lost for the season after suffering a knee injury in practice Feb. 19. Lee, a graduate of George Wythe High, was averaging 3.7 points but was receiving reduced playing time when he was injured.

\ With a 5-11 record, VMI's baseball team has more than doubled its victory total of last season, when the Keydets finished 2-35-1. Senior outfielder Warren Williams, a career platoon player, was hitting .531 through 13 games.

The highlight of the spring might have been a 10-inning, 5-4 loss to then-No. 3 Florida State. The Keydets scored four runs in the first inning and had a fifth nullified when a batter stepped out of the batter's box. The Seminoles tied the score with two out in the ninth.

\ Junior linebacker Tony Woods and sophomore fullback Butch Jennings were not on hand for the start of spring football practice at VMI this week. Woods started for parts of two seasons and Jennings was a backup this year after starting four games in 1990. Neither is expected to return.

\ If there is a one-day attendance record for the state's Division I football programs, it could be broken next Oct. 31, when Virginia Tech plays host to Miami in Blacksburg and Virginia entertains Florida State for the first time in Charlottesville.
