Richmond-based Central Fidelity Banks Inc. has formed a wholly owned mortgage corporation to provide financing for residential properties. Central Fidelity previously handled mortgages directly through the bank. Bryant W. Baird Jr., former president of C&S/Sovran Mortgage Corp., will head the new subsidiary.

Service America Corp. has been awarded a contract to handle snack-food vending services at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. Beginning March 15 the service will be provided from the company's Radford center.

Thor Inc., a Roanoke general contractor, has been awarded a contract with Washington and Lee University for completion of the Kappa Alpha fraternity house in Lexington. The $500,000 project is to be complete by July. VMDO Architects of Charlottesville is the architect.

The Agriculture Department announced plans Wednesday to strengthen raw milk prices, just as the nation's dairy farmers have begun to see a springtime slide in their prices because of a seasonal production increase.
