WYTHE SCHOOLS SHOW ENROLLMENT INCREASE

Wythe County schools are bucking the trend in Southwest Virginia by registering an increase in the number of students.

As of the end of February, the county's enrollment was 4,343, nearly 100 more pupils than had been projected for the school year. It is also five more than were enrolled at this time last year.

Enrollments in Wythe County had been declining for about 10 years. That hurts school systems because federal and state funding is tied to average attendance numbers.

The School Board got the new figures at its meeting Wednesday. It also passed a resolution honoring the George Wythe High School girls' volleyball team, which won the state championship. The team members are to receive symbolic "keys to the town" at a ceremony this morning.
