CARROLL DISPATCHER WAS VICTIM OF FIRE

The body of a man found in the ashes of a house fire last weekend was identified Wednesday as that of Wade J. Jones, a member of the Carroll County Sheriff's Department.

Jones had been reported missing by his family and friends Saturday, the day after the fire. But it took the medical examiner's office in Roanoke several days to confirm his identity.

The autopsy showed no bullet or stab wounds, and the cause of death was given as smoke inhalation. Sheriff R.D. Carrico said the investigation was still open and that the cause of the fire had not been pinpointed.

The home that burned belonged to Tom Foster of High Point, N.C. It was near an apple orchard in the Cana section and about a half-mile from Jones' home.

Jones had been with the Sheriff's Department for 13 years, working as a jailer, dispatcher and civil process server.
