VAMC NURSES TAKE PRIDE IN VETERANS' CARE

WE WOULD like to express our opinions on statements to the media about the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Salem.

We are registered nurses who take pride in the care given our veterans. It is well-known to the public that staffing shortages in the health-care field exist nationwide, not just at the Salem VAMC. Despite our shortages, we attempt to utilize our staff advantageously through cross-training, developing methods to minimize time spent on non-nursing duties, optimizing time spent performing direct patient care, and numerous other measures.

Our veterans' care and overall welfare are of primary concern to us, and every attempt is made to deliver the highest standard of care to each patient. We believe this goal is being met as evidenced by patient-satisfaction surveys, thank-you notes, and other favorable comments received daily from patients and families.

Change frequently produces stress. Nevertheless, we believe that as nurses, we continue to perform our duties in a competent, professional manner.

We are proud of our new building, the state-of-the-art equipment, and our ability to provide primary care to a large number of individuals on an ongoing basis. We are looking forward to continuing this type of care when we occupy the new building this spring.
