SOUTH AFRICA ELIGIBLE FOR U.S. PROGRAM

The State Department has designated South Africa as a "friendly country" now eligible for participation in a U.S. trade and development program, it was announced Thursday.

The decision means that South Africa will be eligible for feasibility studies and other planning services for projects in developing and middle income countries.

Funds for these activities are channeled through the Trade and Development Program, an independent government agency.

The studies are carried out by American firms, and the projects offer export opportunities for U.S. business. - Associated Press
