ROOT, CARL F.

RADFORD - Dr. Carl Frederick Root died Wednesday in a Radford hospital. He was an air force captain in World War II and a member of the Portsmouth, Va., Rotary Club. He was born in Berwick, Pa., and received his degree of Doctor of Medicine from Loma Linda University in Calif. and a Masters in public health from Johns Hopkins University, and was also board certified in preventive medicine. Dr. Root practiced medicine in Marvel Reading, Pa., and in North Carolina prior to serving as a Director of Public Health in Wytheville, Va., and of the Tidewater Health District. Surviving are his wife, Sylvia M. Root, Radford; one son, Carl F. Root, Jr., Brevard, N.C.; a daughter, Lynn Marie Masterjohn, Beaverton, Ore.; two stepsons, John Chappell, Norfolk; Stephen Todd Chappell, Burke; his mother and stepfather, Velma and Charlie Boyko, Nescopeck, Pa.; a brother, David Root, Marshfield, Wis. Four grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be at 4:00 p.m. Saturday at the DeVilbiss Funeral Chapel with Pastor Phil Hannan officiating. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Radford Seventh Day Adventist Church. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Friday in the DeVilbiss Funeral Home.
