TREE SEMINAR SCHEDULED FOR APRIL

A seminar on tree management for residential properties will be held in April at Virginia Western Community College in Roanoke.

A three-phased program, it will be held on the nights of April 7 and 9 and on the morning of April 11.

The seminar will be presented by the Virginia Tech extension service. A registration fee of $10 will be charged. Pre-registration is requested but not required.

The program April 7 will deal with the value of trees, along with planting and pruning techniques.

The April 9 program will cover tree maintenance and care, tips for homeowners on choosing an arborist and a question-and-answer period.

On April 11, the group will visit a neighborhood for a study of trees in the field.

Instructors for the April 7 program include Dr. Bonnie Appelton, associate professor of horticulture at the Tidewater Experiment Station at Virginia Beach, and Dr. Jay Stipes, professor of shade-tree pathology at Virginia Tech.

Instructors for the April 9 program will be Dan Henry, urban forester in Roanoke; Rob Horne, president of Custom Cut Tree Service in Roanoke; and Dr. Peter P. Feret, professor of forestry at Virginia Tech.

Both of the programs will be moderated by Debbie Sinex, horticulturist for Salem.

The April 11 field trip will be conducted by Henry and Rob Trickel, urban forester with the Virginia Department of Forestry.

The conference registrar is Jacqui Brown at the extension service office in Salem.
