CIGARETTE BRANDS ADVERTISED MOST LEAD IN SALES TO TEENS, CDC SAYS

A study shows teen-age smokers are much more likely than adults to pick the nation's most widely advertised cigarettes, federal health officials said Thursday.

The Centers for Disease Control reported that surveys show smokers ages 12 to 18 prefer Marlboro, Newport or Camel, the three most heavily advertised brands. Adult smokers choose Marlboro, followed by Winston and Salem.

The study came three days after Surgeon General Antonia Novello called on the makers of Camel cigarettes to pull their ad campaign featuring the cartoon character "Joe Camel."

"The reason why we're doing this is to see if there's something in the appeal of these products which appeals more to kids," said Dr. David Nelson of the CDC's Office on Smoking and Health.

"It's pretty clear that with the strong preference for three brands - over 80 percent - we need to look at those things," he said.

Tobacco companies have been criticized for crafting advertising that encourages young people to smoke. Industry representatives insist the charges are groundless.
