BLACKSBURG CHAMBER GIVES SERVICE AWARDS

The Greater Blacksburg Chamber of Commerce honored several citizens at its annual membership gala and awards dinner Thursday.

William and Peggy Lavery received the 1991 Distinguished Citizens of the Year award for their involvement in the community for many years.

The Laverys are co-chairmen of the South Main Street landscaping project, raising money for the public and private project to plant trees and shrubs along the town's main entranceway.

Under their guidance, citizens, businesses and various groups have pledged more than $147,280 to the project. The Laverys also sponsored a tree for each of their children.

William Lavery is past president of Virginia Tech.

Another prominent couple, Pat and Sandra Cupp, were named as 1991 Business Persons of the Year. Both have been active in the real estate community for many years.

Pat Cupp has served as president of the chamber and the New River Valley Homebuilders Association. He is currently the vice president of the New River Valley Realtors Association.

Sandra Cupp serves on the board of the New River Valley Friends of the Roanoke Symphony, and is a member of Toastmasters International. She also has served as co-chairwoman of the chamber's annual auction.

The Cupps' company, BCR Real Estate, has received the town's award for civic beautification. It employs 15 full-time and 19 part-time employees.

Also honored at the banquet was Clinton LeGette, principal of Blacksburg High School. He received the chamber's Award for Excellence in Education.

In his 3 1/2 years at the school, LeGette has been instrumental in initiating a drop-out prevention program and broadening the vocational and tutoring programs.

Under LeGette's leadership, the high school has twice received the Central Fidelity award on the basis that half of the school's athletes made a 3.0 grade-point average.
