VA. ECONOMY FELT BETTER IN JANUARY

Virginia's economy hasn't bucked the recession, but it showed some improvement in January compared to a year earlier, according to a new report from the College of William and Mary.

The college's Bureau of Business Research said all seven of its economic indicators topped levels of last January.

The most noticeable improvement came in building permits, which increased 39.1 percent, said Bureau Director Roy Pearson.

But the report said many key indicators remained below pre-recession levels. Only three categories - building permits, bank debits and water consumption - rose to January 1990 levels. - Associated Press
