DIRTY TACTICS DISGRACE THE CANDIDATES

THE RACE is on. Between now and Nov. 3, the American public will be severely punished, maybe even tortured with negative political ads on television, radio, and in the daily news.

Get ready, because I have this psychic feeling that George Bush is going to be kinder and gentler than he ever has been. The object of his affection at the moment is one of his own, Mr. Buchanan. But just wait until the curtain closes at the Democratic Convention.

None of us can hope to escape this trial. Even our children and grandchildren will be subjected to it as they watch their cartoons and Disney programs. We will all have to watch as our "greatest leaders" emotionally scar and degrade one another. It will be X-rated from start to finish.

My face will be flushed partly with anger, partly from embarrassment, but mostly from the emotional stress of having to choose between "the evil of the two lessers."

This kind of campaign is exactly why there are so few willing to run for our top offices. The majority of men and women do not want their families to go through all the harassing of the down-and-dirty tactics used by their opponents.

It is absolutely disgraceful for human beings seeking the presidential nomination or office to conduct themselves in such a manner. I believe in the old saying, "it's not whether you win or lose but how you play the game." Maybe all voters should analyze just how the game is played. The field will be muddy, and Grandma's lye soap will be needed for the wash.

My advice to those who feel as I do is to make use of your VCR, and when you play back, fast-forward frequently. SARAH WIRT BUCHANAN
