ROANOKER PLEADS GUILTY IN TRAFFIC DEATH OF TEEN

A Roanoke man pleaded guilty Friday in Montgomery County Circuit Court to involuntary manslaughter in the traffic death of an Elliston youth in August 1990.

Edward Keith Grosvenor, 34, was sentenced to serve four years of a 10-year prison term. After serving four years, Grosvenor will be on probation for six years.

James Edward Sallee, 17, was killed when he was thrown from the back of Grosvenor's car after a wreck, Commonwealth's Attorney Phil Keith told Judge Kenneth Devore.

Keith said a blood test showed Grosvenor was legally drunk at the time of the accident.

Grosvenor was driving west on U.S. 11-460 on Aug. 12, 1990, at an excessive rate of speed, Keith said. He lost control of the vehicle after going over a bridge. The car hit a guard rail, flipped and rolled.

Sallee, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown over the guard rail. His head struck a tree, breaking his neck, Keith said.

Another passenger, who was wearing a seat belt, was not seriously injured, Keith said.

Grosvenor was seriously injured in the accident and was taken to a Charlottesville hospital. His long recovery was one reason it took the case this long to make it to court, Keith said.
