FIRE DESTROYS AUTO PARTS STORAGE FACILITY

Fire gutted a three-story auto parts storage building here Sunday morning despite the efforts of firefighters from four departments.

The fire at Randy's Auto Parts was reported about 3 a.m., according to Rural Retreat Fire Chief Dale Mercer.

"When we first got here, there was just a lot of smoke," he said, but flames broke through the roof about 30 minutes later. The area around the building in downtown Rural Retreat has been blocked off.

Firefighters from Wytheville, Speedwell and Atkins assisted in bringing the fire under control. Mercer said it was not immediately known how it started or what the damage estimate is. - Southwest Bureau
