NO PLACE LIKE HOME FOR NO. 1 CAVALIERS

If it keeps winning, Virginia's women's basketball team can advance to its third straight Final Four without leaving home.

The Cavaliers, regular-season and tournament champions in the ACC, were awarded the No. 1 seed in the East Region and will receive a first-round bye.

The Cavaliers (29-1) will serve as host for a second-round game Sunday, when they will meet the winner of Wednesday night's game between George Washington (24-6) and Vermont (29-0).

UVa, making its ninth consecutive NCAA appearance, earlier had been selected as the host site for the East Region championship March 26 and 28 at University Hall.

Virginia is one of four ACC teams that received an NCAA bid and two of the others - Clemson and North Carolina - are in the East. Maryland is in the Mideast.

"I think the East Region is extremely strong," UVa coach Debbie Ryan said. "I think it will provide us with the impetus to be focused and not rely on the fact that we're playing at home."

Ryan said she knows little about Vermont, the only undefeated team in Division I, but George Washington was once ranked in the top 10. Wednesday night's game will be played at GW.
