JAMES, GEORGE F. George F. "Jesse" James, age 65, of 670 East Pine Street, Wytheville, Va. died Saturday, March 14, 1992 in the Beaufort Memorial Hospital in Beaufort, S.C. He was born in Wythe County, the son of the late Hubert James and Helen Phipps Buchanan. He was educated in the Wythe County School System and received his B.A. Degree from Emory and Henry College after serving in the U.S. Navy. He taught and coached at both Abingdon High School and Saltville High School from 1950 to 1956. He was an agent for State Farm Insurance Co., Wytheville from 1956 to 1960. He served as District Manager of State Farm Insurance Co., Philadelphia, Pa. from 1960 to 1963. In July 1963 he founded the James Insurance Agency of Wytheville. He was a member of the IIAV Legislative Committee, a member of the Great Performance Council, Aetna Insurance Company (1983), a member of the Executive Council, The Hanover Insurance Companies (1980), and a member of the Executive Council, Aetna Insurance Company (1986). He was elected to the Wythe County Board of Supervisors in 1968. He served for 22 years, three of which he served as Vice-Chairman and ten years as Chairman. He was a member of the Wythe County Community Hospital Board and served on the Wytheville-Wythe-Bland County Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Wythe County Industrial Authority and recently was elected to the Emory and Henry College Board of Visitors. He served on the local Government Advisory Council, as well as other committees for the past and present Governors of Virginia. He was a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church, a member of the Wytheville Chapter of Rotary International and a charter member of both the Wythe County Sports Hall of Fame and the Emory and Henry College Sports Hall of Fame. He is survived by his wife, Peggy Burton James; one son and daughter-in-law, George F., Jr. and Charlene James of Wytheville; three daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and David Snidow of Midlothian; Cindy and Kevin Mitchell of Beaufort, S.C.; Betty and Steve Irvin of Wytheville; nine grandchildren, Mary Carter and Katie Snidow, Dustin and Regan Mitchell, Adam, Charles and Taylor James, Jesse and Benjamin Irvin; one sister, Helen James Groseclose of Bristol; three brothers, William Ford James of Rural Retreat; Vernon Steele James of Bristol; Gene Hansford James of Wytheville. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 17, 1992 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Rev. Norman C. Wilhoit officiating. Interment will be in the West End Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Barnett Funeral Home from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Monday. The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the St. Paul United Methodist Church Building Fund. Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville is in charge of the arrangements.
